Arsenal thump Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 in penultimate pre-season friendly

Gunners run riot against German champions with Havertz, Nketiah and Jesus on target

Arsenal returned to winning ways in pre-season in emphatic style with the help of three goals in the first 38 minutes of a 4-1 win over reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Kai Havertz fired the hosts ahead after just eight minutes when he turned in a cross from close range.

Bayer Leverkusen equalised through Moussa Diaby just six minutes later, but Arsenal restored their lead through Eddie Nketiah just before the half-hour mark.

Granit Xhaka made it 3-1 to the Gunners just before half-time and Gabriel Jesus added a fourth just after the hour mark.

Pre-season comes to a close

The match was Arsenal's penultimate pre-season friendly, with a match against Lyon to come on Sunday before the Premier League season kicks off on August 11.

Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, have one more pre-season friendly, against Valencia on August 13, before their Bundesliga campaign begins on August 18.

Conclusion

Arsenal will be buoyed by the result as they prepare for the new season, while Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to improve their form ahead of their Bundesliga opener.
