Monaco GP 2023: Perez Crashes Out on Lap 1

Magnussen's Haas Triggers Collision, Resulting in Red Flag

Checo Perez's hopes of a strong finish at the Monaco Grand Prix were dashed in a dramatic first-lap incident. Replays showed that Kevin Magnussen's Haas clipped the rear of Perez's Red Bull, sending the Mexican driver spinning into the barriers. The impact sent debris flying across the track, forcing race officials to wave the red flag and halt the race.

Haas Team Reacts to Collision

Haas released a statement following the incident, expressing regret for their role in the crash. Team principal Guenther Steiner stated that Magnussen had "misjudged" the distance to Perez's car and apologized for the resulting damage. Steiner also hinted at possible mechanical issues with Magnussen's Haas, which could have contributed to the collision.

Red Bull Expresses Frustration

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed frustration over the incident, calling it "unnecessary" and "amateurish." Horner questioned Magnussen's decision-making, suggesting that he had been too aggressive in his attempt to overtake Perez. Horner also expressed concern over the extent of damage to Perez's car, raising doubts about his ability to continue in the race even after the restart.
