Descartes' Pituitary Theory

A Historical Perspective

Descartes' Proposal

René Descartes, a renowned 17th-century philosopher and mathematician, proposed an intriguing theory regarding the pituitary gland. According to Descartes, the pituitary served as an "antenna" for the brain, facilitating communication between the soul and the physical body.

Descartes believed that the pituitary gland, located at the base of the skull, was the seat of the soul. He proposed that the soul communicated with the brain through the pituitary, transmitting commands and receiving sensory information. This theory, while groundbreaking for its time, lacked scientific evidence and has since been refuted.
