25 Years After JonBenét Ramsey Murder, Boulder Investigators Analyze 1,000 Pieces of DNA
Unsolved Case Remains a Mystery as Nation Remembers Tragic Crime
JonBenét Ramsey, the American child beauty queen, was brutally murdered in her Boulder, Colorado home in 1996.
Twenty-five years after the gruesome crime that shocked the nation, police investigators in Boulder have announced that they have analyzed nearly 1,000 DNA samples in their ongoing efforts to solve the murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey.
On December 25, 1996, JonBenét's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, discovered her body in the basement of their home. The young girl had been strangled and had suffered a blow to the head.
In the intervening years, police have followed up on numerous leads but have not yet apprehended a suspect in the case. The one individual who seemed most likely to have committed the murder, JonBenét's brother Burke, has been cleared by DNA evidence.
The case of JonBenét Ramsey's murder continues to fascinate the public, and many documentaries and books have been produced about it. In recent years, former Boulder detective Lou Smit, who worked on the case until his death in 2010, has emerged as a key figure in the investigation. Smit believed that there was strong evidence that an intruder had killed JonBenét, and he argued that the Ramseys had been unjustly accused of her murder.
The recent analysis of 1,000 pieces of DNA by Boulder investigators may provide new clues in the case. However, it is still unclear whether this latest development will finally lead to the arrest and conviction of JonBenét Ramsey's killer.
