Washington, DC - President Biden has signed legislation that would ban TikTok from operating in the United States. The law gives TikTok's Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, 270 days to sell or separate the app from its Chinese operations.
The new legislation provides nine months for TikTok to comply. During this time, the app will be allowed to continue operating in the United States.
The law was passed with overwhelming support from both parties in Congress. The House voted 336-71 in favor of the bill, and the Senate voted 98-2 in favor.
President Biden said in a statement that he signed the legislation "to protect the American people from the threat posed by TikTok." He said that the app "collects vast amounts of data on its users, which could be used by the Chinese government to track Americans, blackmail them, or spread propaganda."
TikTok has denied that it shares user data with the Chinese government. However, the company has been under increasing scrutiny from US lawmakers and regulators over its ties to China.
The new law will take effect immediately. However, TikTok will not suddenly disappear from your phone. The app will be allowed to continue operating while ByteDance works to sell or separate it from its Chinese operations.
